A FAMILY-RUN company which specialises in vintage Ferraris is redeveloping the business on the back of record demand.

GTO Engineering is creating a purpose-built workshop complex as part of a £6 million switch to new headquarters. And the company, which services, repairs and makes rare spare parts for the classic cars, has found the ideal solution to keep it ticking over during the development work. A state-of-the-art temporary facility supplied by Spaciotempo is ensuring the business continues to run smoothly for the duration of the three-year project. The value of vintage Ferraris has gone through the roof in recent years with the rarest models, such as the vintage 250, worth up to £30 million. But Mark Lyon, founder and managing director of GTO, based near Reading in Berkshire, says business is booming.

He said: “These cars are highly prized, very rare and can be extremely expensive, but demand for their repair and restoration has never been stronger. We were bursting at the seams at our old headquarters, so the move into new premises is a natural progression for the business. We needed an interim solution quickly and the temporary workshop is ideal. It will immediately give us more space and will keep us operational while the building work is carried out.”

The move is the latest chapter in a formidable success story for the company, which has grown almost beyond recognition since it was first started by former mechanic Mark in the 1980s. First providing servicing and repairs for vintage models of the famous Italian marque, GTO soon added a specialist operation sourcing, making and supplying increasingly rare parts. The company, which has customers all over the world, now employs 40 staff and has several satellite operations around the country, including a storage facility in Wales.

The new premises, just three miles down the road from their original headquarters, will provide a base from which to build on recent success and the 650sq m temporary building on site now will play a key role in the operation until 2018. The high-tech workshop will have all the heating, lighting, fixtures and fittings and security features you’d expect in a modern, energy-efficient unit.

And Scott Jameson, managing director of Spaciotempo, is confident it will provide the perfect home for GTO’s highly-skilled engineers.

He said: “The company came to us for a timely and cost-effective temporary solution and that’s what we’re all about. No business can afford to stop trading during building work or improvement projects and we’re happy to help out in the mean time. We do quite a lot of work within the motoring trade, from projects like this to fully-fitted car showrooms, because our buildings are so flexible. And because there’s no ground work involved in installation, GTO’s workshop was erected in double-quick time.”
